BREAKING THE SILENCE

‘Every story has a turning point’

Sarah Hughes is a Midlands-based actress & TV, film and SFX artist and is about to begin production on her first ever full feature film.

Breaking The Silence is an upcoming project which follows a man going through a domestic violence relationship at the hands of his female partner.

“There is so much out there from a women’s point of view”, says Sarah. “But I wanted it to be from a man’s and his experience of asking for help”.

The production is currently casting for the lead role of the victim called Daniel. The film’s synopsis sees ‘Daniel hiding the suffering he endures behind forced smiles and quiet routines. Trapped in an abusive relationship that’s he’s too ashamed to talk about’.

‘The stigma around male victims convinced him no one will understand and each day chips away at who he used to be. But when a moment of clarity breaks through the chaos Daniel finally finds the courage to escape and discovers that reaching out can be the beginning of reclaiming his life.’

Sarah herself has featured in a number of films, both in front of and behind the camera, including Ummah - The Godmother (2024), Brutus (2024) and Sacrilege (2020) but this will be her first as director.

Although still in its early days, in preparation for Breaking The Silence the filmmaker has already spoken to many men’s charities. And the film will also help highlight current 2025 statistics for men that are suffering owing to domestic violence crimes, and hopes to shine a spotlight on the sensitive issues surrounding the topic.

Sarah goes on to add, “So I could write this film accurately, I spoke to many brave men that told me their stories too. And with this film, I also plan to raise money for the charities I reached out to”.
