Psycho screening with live orchestra heading to Nottingham

“Well a boy’s best friend is his mother”.

This Halloween, give yourself the fright of your life with a big-screen showing of Psycho (1960) and Bernard Herrmann’s chilling music performed live by The Limelight Orchestra.

The Psycho in Concert: Film with Live Orchestra event takes place on Tuesday 31st October 2023 at Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall.

With the sinister motel, a strange young man and the horror that lurks behind the shower curtain – the stabbing violins of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho are the soundtrack to all our nightmares.

Scored by Bernard Herrmann, his remarkably inventive string compositions are the musical driving force and will be captured by a live orchestra underscoring the tension of the thrilling horror plot.

Psycho is based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Robert Bloch and stars Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles, John Gavin and Martin Balsam and centres on an encounter between on-the-run embezzler Marion Crane (Leigh) and shy motel proprietor Norman Bates (Perkins).

In the aftermath, a private investigator (Balsam), Marion's lover Sam Loomis (Gavin), and her sister Lila (Miles) investigate her disappearance.

Filmed on a lower budget in black-and-white, it divided critics on its release due to its controversial subject matter, but ended up being nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Director for Hitchcock and Best Supporting Actress for Leigh.

And Herrmann’s memorable score meant it was subsequently voted into the top 5 of the American Film Institute’s greatest film scores of all time. The music added tension and drama with Herrmann using a lowered music budget to his advantage by writing for a string orchestra rather than a full symphonic ensemble.

And The Royal Concert Hall is the perfect setting with its luxurious 2000+ seat auditorium being the ideal surroundings for this illustrious screening of the well-known classic horror.
