Curve announces new shows at season launch

After more than a year without theatre on their stages, the Curve in Leicester was delighted to welcome audiences back to their building for a spectacular new season.

To kick-start their reopening, the Season Launch event at Curve on Thursday 20th May was held at their venue as well as streaming the show live online.

As well as discovering more about their new season, guests were amongst the first audiences to experience their 533-seat socially distanced auditorium and the new measures put in place to ensure visits to Curve are both safe and enjoyable.

And what a warm welcome was had. The audience lapped up the new circular stage layout, the announcement of new shows and a selection of exclusive performances of some of the songs from shows soon to be taking bookings. All in an environment that was safe, friendly and socially distanced to make people feel comfortable in these returning times.

So what’s coming up over the next 18 months? There’s a huge slate of shows but as fans of films we’ll list below some of the (many) highlights Curve will be bringing to the stage with a movie-related theme.

THE MUSIC OF ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER - MON 7 - SAT 19 JUN 2021

Beginning this summer to open things with a bang is a show with iconic artists performing Andrew’s greatest songs from The Phantom of the Opera, Evita, The School of Rock, Sunset Boulevard and er, Cats (better than the film I promise!)

GREASE - THE MUSICAL - FRI 30 - SAT 31 JUL 2021

My personal favourite musical, you’ll be whisked away to a summer of loving and 50s quiffs and hand jives to die for.

DIAL M FOR MURDER - TUE 31 AUG - SAT 4 SEP 2021

Made famous by Alfred Hitchcock’s world-renowned film of 1950, Dial M for Murder heads to the curve for a night of mystery and suspense.

EVERYBODY'S TALKING ABOUT JAMIE - MON 20 - SAT 25 SEP 2021

With the film version coming to Amazon Prime later this year, see what all the fuss is about with the story of a teenager overcoming prejudice to become a drag queen.

PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT - THE MUSICAL - MON 13 - SAT 18 SEP 2021

Speaking of which, filmed as an 1994 road comedy film directed by Stephan Elliott, Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce and a transgender woman (Terence Stamp) journey across Australia in a bus. Catch the stage version this Autumn.

CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF - FRI 3 SEP — SAT 18 SEP

Most famously known for the 1958 movie adaptation starring Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman, Tennessee Williams’s drama follows an alcoholic man and his suffering wife.

HAIRSPRAY - MON 4 - SAT 9 OCT 2021

First a 1988 film by John Waters then adapted for the theatre before being turned into another film in 2007, Hairspray is a cult American musical with music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Head over to Baltimore for a bevvy of 60s dance and Motown influenced tracks.

THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE - TUE 2 - SAT 13 NOV 2021
The smash hit production of C.S. Lewis’ classic The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, voted the nation’s favourite book in 2019, is coming to Curve in November with screen versions including the iconic BBC series and 2005 movie to whisk you back to Narnia.

MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING: THE MUSICAL - MON 14 MAR - SAT 19 MAR 2022
The stage show hopes to capture the magic of the 1997 romantic-comedy starring Julia Roberts.

MAMMA MIA! - TUE 13 - SAT 24 SEP 2022
The legendary jukebox musical stuffed to the brim with hits from ABBA has been made into two films starring Meryl Streep and is already the 7th longest-running show in the West End. Take a chance on this one for sure!

SISTER ACT - MON 17 - SAT 29 OCT 2022
Rescheduled from last year, the Sister Act movie starred Whoopi Goldberg as a gangster’s moll going into witness protection at a convent. The Broadway and UK smash-hit musical sees our hero Deloris helping her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own. Featuring original music by Tony® and 8-time Oscar® winner Alan Menken (Disney’s Aladdin, Enchanted)

And last but by no means least…

THE WIZARD OF OZ - SAT 19 NOV 2022 - SUN 8 JAN 2023
One of the greatest films of all time with some of the most iconic music of all time comes to the stage where audiences can join Dorothy, The Tin Man, Scarecrow and Lion for a waltz up the Yellow Brick Road. We’re not in Kansas anymore. We’re in Leicester!
