UK Premier of new literary film comes to Nottingham

Kino Koło Notts are making final preparations for their next event premiering a new Bulgarian documentary - Cinema Lover: Stanka Penchevaabout - about one of the countries giants of literature.

The group and Nottingham City of Literature will screen this documentary at ARC Space in Nottingham on Wednesday 28th January 2026 and the film recounts the life of esteemed national poet Stanka Pencheva using archival footage collected by her own daughter.

The film offers an intimate glimpse of a bygone era, and insight into the inspirations for the formidable writer.  The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion chaired by Nottingham City of Literature Director, Hannah Trevarthen, along with Leeds based artist and translator Kristina Nenova, and others.

Liam Skillen from Kino Koło Notts said, "It’s a real pleasure to be in a position to support such important narratives in film, and bring to light the inspiring life of a distinguished poet little known here. I think a lot of people will relate to the desire to preserve memory alongside cultural identity. Cinema and storytelling are both such powerful tools for deepening compassion and empathy".

"Events like this allow us to come together, listen, and share a common experience in a way that is real and profound."

Hannah Trevarthen from Nottingham City of Literature said, "We are thrilled to be supporting Kino Kolo to share the life and work of Stanka Pencheva, the distinguished Bulgarian poet, and to discuss the power of storytelling. We are particularly

delighted that this project will connect organisations from Nottingham, a UNESCO City of Literature and Sofia, a UNESCO City of Film."
