POV - The Found Footage Project arrives at Derby Quad

midlandsmovies • October 22, 2025

Found footage is a subgenre of horror that has been growing for quite some time, and is a medium that allows creators to develop their projects on a shoestring budget.

And POV: THE FOUND FOOTAGE PROJECT will be running at Derby’s QUAD venue on the 22nd November, and will be a day-long festival and celebration of the form, with an exciting range of screenings throughout the event. Taking in brand-new movies, a classic to close and a variety of short films along the way, this promises to be a must-attend day for lovers of found footage horror.

Derby QUAD's Alex Davis says, "As well as offering new and exciting creative possibilities, for me its democratisation of making movies is even more striking – we’re hearing so many new voices in the field because you no longer need a sizeable budget and a vast array of filming equipment to bring your idea to life."

"Even the vastly successful Blair Witch Project was developed for the modest sum of $60,000 dollars, and went on to achieve vast success and huge profit with it", adds Alex.

The day kicks off at 1pm with a SHORT FILM SHOWCASE, with two locally-produced shorts in the form of Royston Vale Road and Exhibit B, where directors Chris Annable (of the wonderful Straight to Video) and David Gregory will be present to discuss their work.

Keeping it local with their second feature, BEYOND THE WITCHING HOUR is set in Derbyshire and created by acclaimed director John Williams. This will be one of the first screenings for the movie, which sees two paranormal Youtubers exploring rumours of a witch who used to live in the area – but the real story might just be even worse than the local legends…

Their third selection is IN OUR BLOOD, which had a well-received premiere at Fantasia Film Festival earlier this year. The story follows Emily, who somewhat unwillingly accepts an invitation to reunite with her mother, only to slowly reveal a dark family secret. With excellent characterisation and an intriguing slow-burn plot, the film hopes to hit all the right notes for the found footage genre.

This is followed by IT DOESN’T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS - which is never going to have any physical or streaming release. Namely, if you want to see it, you have to get along to the cinema – be there or be square say the filmmakers! The plot sees two filmmakers who buy a creepy building to shoot their horror film in, before finding that fiction meets fact in unexpected ways.

The day closes with found footage classic [REC], Spain’s most famous entry into the canon and a highly acclaimed example of the genre. A television reporter’s investigation into an emergency in an apartment building leads to unmitigated terror – and whether you’ve seen this one before or not, experiencing it on the big screen will be something else.
