Midlands Spotlight on The Case Next Door

midlandsmovies • October 5, 2026

The Case Next Door is a new short film from student filmmaker James Rowland who explores the noir detective genre through our very own streets of Coventry.

An homage to black and white crime noirs of the 30s and 40s, the film tells the story of Don Colt – played by Aayush Sarpal. Through paper-thin walls the man finds himself “chasing detectives, dames and sanity himself”.

With an upcoming release date of 8th October 2026, the filmmaker has recently launched the short film’s first teaser trailer which is out now on the production team’s YouTube channel. You can watch this exciting new glimpse in the video above!

Written & directed by James Rowland himself, in addition to Aayush Sarpal the film also stars local actors Phoebe Amos and Felix Munt. More surprising is the film’s wider international connections with music by Luis Humanoide, a composer based in Mexico who has created an audio experience alongside NoirTales and Production Crate.

Director James Rowland, a student at Finham Parkin Coventry, describes the origins of his production and his fascination with film since a young age.

“Since childhood I’ve been passionate about filmmaking. From making various stop motion videos as a kid, to now having directed my 7th short student film - each giving me the opportunity to improve my skill”.

Rowland goes on to add, “In the spirit of this, The Case Next Door has allowed me to work much more closely with my actors in creating a world; through accents, costumes, and locations. I’m hugely grateful to them, and to Walmsley’s for letting me use one of their Coventry apartments [for location shooting]”.

“I’ve built up a regular cast of actors across my shorts, and I thoroughly enjoy working with them each time. They have to give up lots of time for these projects - Aayush Sarpal recently performed in the Edinburgh Fringe - I’m really grateful that they make the time for them”, he continues.

The filmmaker says the plot involves Don Colt as a ‘nosey neighbour’ who, listening through paper thin walls, gets caught up in a scheme involving authorities and dames (Phoebe Amos herself). There’s also a unique aspect with his sanity being embodied by Don’s roommate Sam (Felix Munt).

Rowland finishes by stating, “It’s a fun homage to the film-noir genre, but with a twist… I hope value can be found in that”.
