The Sunshine Café

Directed by Jill Lampert

2026

The Sunshine Café is an independently funded dementia friendly programme that’s held once a month in St Chad’s Cathedral in Sutton Coldfield. The programme, led by Kathryn and Marian, is intended to provide an inclusive and safe space for those suffering with dementia.

The café offers hand massages done by professional masseuse Lucy, as well as accessible Pilates sessions run by instructor Eloise who makes the exercises fun and engaging for the guests. Visitors of the café are also likely to encounter Coco, a friendly support dog brought in by Pets as Therapy who offers comfort and joy.

The Sunshine Café prides itself on being individual-centred, ensuring that each of their visitors and volunteers feels welcomed and has a pleasant experience. This short documentary showcasing the café’s operations does an incredible job at highlighting the positive impact that the programme has not just on the visitors, but on their loved ones and all of the volunteers as well.

It’s evident that Kathryn and Marian, along with everyone involved in the programme, are dedicated to providing care for the dementia patients that visit them. The Sunshine Café is independently funded by a £5 entrance fee for guests and the occasional donation acquired through funding applications and local charities who generously support their work, usually on a single-event basis. However, volunteers at The Sunshine Café haven’t let limited funding dwindle their dedication to the programme.

Volunteers dedicate their time to preparing food, decorating the allocated space in the cathedral, tending to visitors, and creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Guests can be seen dancing, singing, smiling, and socializing with one another in a safe environment.

This documentary truly highlights the importance of creating safe and inclusive spaces for those who need it. Not only do the dementia patients receive care through massages and exercise, but The Sunshine Café also gives them a space to feel like themselves again. The Sunshine Café is a deeply moving and inspirational look into a programme that provides crucial positive experiences for those suffering with dementia.
