Mammoth Cinema and Kino Koło Notts collaborate to bring poignant documentary to Nottingham

Final preparations are underway for community cinema Kino Koło Notts screening of documentary HOME taking place 4th October at Mammoth Cinema, on Nottingham’s renowned Broad Street.

The culmination of a seven-year collection of films and photographs covering the lives of a handful of people ejected from their own cultures and homes, HOME invites us to explore their experiences creating a new home and finding love at the house of a 90-year-old, bed-ridden writer in suburban London.

The film previously had its UK premier during the KINOTEKA Polish Film Festival at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London, and was officially selected for this year's festival L’Europe autour de l’Europe.

Liam Skillen from Kino Koło Notts said, “I’m really excited for our first screening in the city, especially with such a fantastic venue as Mammoth. This is the perfect film to demonstrate our shared ethos around community, and the importance of coming together."

"It’s a real pleasure to share this award winning film by Mela Hilleard; and its central themes of home, identity and family are ones I’m sure we can all relate to.”

Raffa from Mammoth said, "We are delighted to be hosting Kino Koło Notts for this collaboration! As a Climate Action Cinema, our purpose is to bring people together from all corners of the community, using the power of stories on the big screen to start conversations, inspire action and share feelings about the environmental emergency, and the social crises we all face as a direct consequence.

Particularly in light of the current rise of the far right, the topic of immigration is compelling: finding new homes, identities and families in new communities, while offering dignity, safety and welcome to our fellow humans is a key part of the future we want to build.

'HOME' is the perfect story for everyone to delve into immigration as the communal human experience that it is.”

I really know how to pick what reviews I take on after the Midlands Movies Awards have finished. Following on my piece on Eulogy, we have another film about a family coming to terms with loss, and the impact that grieving has on the people around you.

Death is rarely the worst part of losing someone. It is the cause of a gap; an emptiness in the shape of a person that lasts long after the funeral, after the five stages of grief, after life returns to some level of normality.

Written and directed by Nadine O’Mahony, Rushed is both a love letter to Birmingham’s multiculturalism, and a grounded look at the frictions people of colour come up against every day.

We open, as many a scary movie does, with an ominous quote from the bible - this time from the book of Daniel - before the film introduces us to a police team who are investigating the brutal murder of a young woman.
