“Delusional Daphne gets kidnapped! But who are the ones who are REALLY suffering?”

Kidnapping Delusional Daphne is a new short from first-time Midlands filmmaker Khadijah Islam. The 6-minute short's story sees a delusional girl who is kidnapped and quickly drives her captors insane, convincing them that they’re in love with her in an escalating hostage situation.

As well as writing and directing, Khadijah Islam stars as the eponymous Daphne of the film with supporting turns from actors Thomas Stevenson and Darren Taylor as the kidnappers themselves.

Based in Nottingham, Khadijah is an actor, writer, and filmmaker who aims to create absurd, witty and light-hearted comedies that reflect her unapologetically whimsical personality.

Khadijah explains that her character ‘Delusional Daphne’ began as a way to explore characterisation and storytelling. But it also serves as a creative space for practicing acting, writing, and filmmaking.

And Kidnapping Delusional Daphne is her very first sketch-style short film, and one she is proud of given she wrote, produced, directed, and starred in the skit.

“I’m passionate about making audiences laugh and hope my work brings laughter and levity", says Khadijah. "I like to offer light-heartedness alongside the action, crime, and sci-fi stories that often dominate screens, and have many more projects in development”, she adds.

Can you think of at least three films made about mining in the UK? Not just films like Kes (1969) or Brassed Off (1996), which follow miners or mining villages. Instead, think of films that are actually set in the physical mines themselves.
