Midlands Spotlight - Dan Sowter's Feature Film Comes To Fruition
Midlands Movies Mike talks to Dan Sowter who has taken the long but satisfying journey of getting his film to the big screen...
Dan worked on a recent production called Cute Little Buggers as a production designer and is knee-deep in editing his latest movie called “They Love”. Shot in Uttoxeter, Tutbury and in part London, it was a low budget labour of love for the writer/director.
“They Love” is a dark love story between Jack (Greg Snowden) - a man almost addicted to self harm and Monica (Sally Paffett) - a women trapped in a world of being an escort. Jack is the guy with all the love in the world and no one to share it with whilst Dan describes Monica as the lady who has “more than her fair share of lust... but never love”. Through a chance (!) meeting these two unlucky souls in love have come together for another purpose that only 'The Stranger' knows of.
The script had been with Dan for about 9 years in many different drafts but when college, work and university got in the way, the script was unfortunately put on the back burner. When Dan came out of University in 2008 he had no work and not a great deal planned as it was the start of credit crunch so he had to move back home to Uttoxeter. When a friend lent him a film called 'Camera Bluff' which tells the story of a man making films with what he had on his 'door step' Dan felt that now was the right time to have a go at filmmaking himself.
Dan had done many shorts in the past and his final project at University was a short called ‘Broken English’ which came out at 30 minutes long and featured Haruka Abe as his leading lady. Haruka now has a very impressive CV including the new Keanu Reeves film “47 Ronin” and Dan said (naively he believes) to himself, “if I can make 30 mins for a short film and do that work load 3 times over, I have a feature on my hands!”
Dan then re-wrote the script, halved the characters/locations and streamlined it and set his sights on getting it made. Dan says although it was a while to get the lead actors, it was worth the wait. With a video/trailer online soon Dan hopes to finally fulfil his film come to fruition.
